Quantitative variation, contd.

It is difficult to distinguish reliably between plants which only differ from one another by a small amount with respect to a quantitative trait.

So genetic progress for these traits is gradual ....

The breeder is trying to gather favourable alleles not all at once but a few at a time.

Progress can continue until all the favourable alleles have been assembled in a single variety.
