Ongoing projects
The ABEE Project is part of the European Union’s “Developing Intelligent Innovation through Research in Agriculture (DeSIRA)” initiative and aims to strengthen the resilience of rural communities in the Sahel to climate change through the establishment of modern equipment and infrastructure for the breeding of varieties of five climate-sensitive crops. It seeks to reach over 40.000 direct beneficiaries in five years (2020-2024).
- Service & expertise provider
- Value chain knowledge
- Digitalization
- Multi-partner coordination
A three-year project (2018-2021) for Enhancing institutional breeding capacity in Ghana, Senegal and Uganda to develop climate resilient crops for African smallholder farmers, coordinated by the IBP and AfricaRIce, and implemented by partner national programs and Universities.
- Demand-driven
- Value chain knowledge
- Digitalization
- Modern breeding integration
The IBP participates in the activities of module 5 on bioinformatics, biometrics and data management of the CGIAR Excellence in Breeding Platform (EiB; 2017-2022). Budget has been allocated for the continued development, deployment and maintenance of BMS Pro.
- BMS Pro development
- Cross-platform support
- Services to CGIAR & NARS
- Genotyping implementation
A combination of commissioned & competitive projects under the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Peanut, together spanning 5 years (2018-2023) to help producers in developing countries. In this context, IBP works to digitalize breeding programs, and to enhance the genetic potential in peanut production across Africa.
- Digital data management
- Phenotypic evaluation
- SNP arrays
- Across countries & projects
When the GCP closed, the IBP continued on as an independent, non-profit initiative registered in the U.S., and hosted at CIMMYT (Phase II: 2014-2019). The IBP has grown into a mature organization providing breeding technology and expertise to improve crop improvement practices around the world.
- BMS Pro development
- Technology adoption
- Online resources
- Public-private partnerships
The origins of the Integrated Breeding Platfom (IBP), launched by the CGIAR Generation Challenge Programme (now closed), to support plant breeders in developing countries (Phase I: 2009-2014). The focus was on the development and deployment of a single-user information system (BMS), and on capacity building (data management, genotyping, infrastructure, etc.)
